Secure Rural Schools (SRS) Reauthorization Act of 2025 – Why It Matters

The Secure Rural Schools (SRS) program is a critical funding source for small and rural school districts in California and across the nation. Established to offset the loss of local revenue due to federally owned lands, SRS funding has supported public education, infrastructure, and essential services in over 4,000 school districts and 700 counties nationwide.

However, SRS expired at the end of FY 2023, creating a major financial crisis for rural communities. Without reauthorization, school districts that rely on this funding face severe budget shortfalls, leading to staff layoffs, program cuts, and deteriorating school infrastructure.

The Secure Rural Schools Reauthorization Act of 2025 (H.R. 1383 & Senate Companion Bill)

🔹 Extends SRS payments through FY 2026, providing vital relief to rural communities.
🔹 Ensures continued funding for education, school transportation, and student support services.
🔹 Recognizes the unique challenges of rural schools, which serve as community hubs and emergency shelters.
